Belt & Roller Conveyors
Manually operated Roller Conveyor is perhaps the most widely used type of conveyor in warehousing and manufacturing. Southern Systems manufactures virtually every type of Roller, as well as Side Frames, and these Roller Conveyors fulfill requirements for most any application ranging from light-duty warehousing to heavy-duty steel mill applications.
Sealed-for-life (grease packed) and relubricable grease-fitting type bearings are available and can be specially ordered.
SSI Roller Conveyors are normally furnished with spring-loaded hex shafts, for ease of removal and replacement. In some special cases, either hog rings or cotter pins may be specified.
Most of Southern System's roller conveyors can be adapted to belt conveyors or belt drive live roller conveyors "in the field". Most "P-series" rollers can be converted to chain driven live roller conveyors in the future, if desirable.
To order roller conveyor, specify the rollers desired, roller centers, the side frames and the back to back dimension. The Southern Systems engineering team will be happy to assist if further information is needed.
Gravity Roller Turns
SSI Roller Conveyor Curves are manufactured in both standard and custom radii to meet individual job requirements. Curves may be sloped in the Field for spiral drop. Whenever smooth flow is essential, differential rolls should be used.

Chain Driven Live Rollers
The chart below shows the minimum center-to-center distance of various roller diameter chain driven rollers. These conveyors are available in a variety of chain sizes, depending on the unit loads to be transported on the conveyor.
Chain Driven Live Rollers are extremely effective for positive traction on the product to be moved if required. SSI manufactures both standard and special Chain Driven Live Roller Conveyor sections. While the chart depicts chain-to-chain units, single strand chain-driven Live Rollers are also available to suit individual requirements.

Tapered Rollers
SSI Tapered Roller Turns are ideally suited to transporting cartons around 90° curves. These rolls may be furnished as plain gravity units and/or equipped with sprockets and powered. The standard rollers utilize 16 gauge welded steel tubing, other gauges are available to suit the particular application.
All rollers are furnished with spring loaded hex shafts for ease of removal and replacement.
Roller lengths are available from 11" through 39". Standard frames consist of angles. Other frames are available.
Single Strand Tapered Chain Driven Live Roller
SSI manufactures a wide variety of custom built, single strand tapered roll, chain-driven live roller turns. The conveyors can be made reversible if desired. Drive units may be located in the center or on either end of the conveyor.
A variety of conveyor widths and turn radii are available.
The "side bow" single strand chain is specifically designed for the application, and may be equipped with an automatic lubricator to assure proper operation of the chain and sprockets.
When ordering, specify the back-to-back (B/B) dimension, required speed, and weights to be handled.
Sprocket to Sprocket Chain Driven Curves
Chain Driven Live Roller Curves can be reversible and are either furnished with a separate drive or driven from connecting conveyors.
Recommended for heavier duty service than that offered by the V-belt types. The maximum load to be handled determines the size and capacities of the rolls and chains used.
Special curves can be made and furnished for any degree and radius turn required.

Turntables
The heavy-duty SSI turntable shown here has a "centering shaft" to assure concentricity in the operation of the turntable. Additionally, when desired, an optional sprocket may be attached to the shaft and driven from a gear motor, to provide automatic indexing from a programmed control console.
Gate Sections
SSI manufactures conventional gates of the counterweight, spring-loaded and air-operated types, to varying conveyor requirements.
Special gates are designed to meet unusual operating conditions. In the above drawing, a special two-level conveyor is equipped with an independently powered 90° "swing-out" gate that is completely automatic. This gate section depicts the wide diversity of SSI's engineering imagination to solve difficult problems.

Floor to Floor Incline Belt Conveyor
Incline Belt Conveyors are typically utilized to transfer unit loads from one floor elevation to another. Many times, the conveyors are made reversible So that products may also be transferred from second floor back to the first floor level.
Most Incline Conveyors, and especially the reversible ones, are equipped with a combination center drive and take-up unit. Additionally, a small horizontal feeder section is attached to the lower end of the conveyor, to facilitate a smooth transfer up the incline.

Typical Press Scrap Handling System
Shown above is one of SSI's Scrap Removal Systems placed beneath a large Stamping Press.
In this continuous automatic operation, the scrap is deposited onto two initial conveyors by the four hoppers indicated. The scrap is then deposited to the remaining numbered conveyors for its passage up and out of the pit.
A cleated belting was used in this instance, although many variations of this system are available from SSI engineers to meet customer and material handling needs.

Vertical Transfer Conveyor
Vertical movement of merchandise is frequently the only practical alternative to space limitations in modern materials-handling. SSI manufactures a complete range of diverse vertical liftveyors and lowerators, including dual strand chain, hydraulic, and air cylinder types. Loads may vary from 30 lbs. to 5,000 lbs. with speeds in excess of 200 FPM.
All SSI vertical lifts incorporate gradual acceleration, high speed transfer, and gradual deceleration.
In the drawing above, (an actual installation), a bridge connects two buildings over three railroad tracks. 3,000 lb. pallet loads are moved at the rate of 1 per minute, and automatically dispatched into storage lanes in the receiving building. Actually, two systems are involved; one for moving products from the south building to the north building, and another for the reverse operation.
Internal to the bridge structure, a chain driven live roller conveyor with multiple drives (for safety purposes) transports 40" pallets at the rate of 1 per minute. When desired, SSI can furnish conveyors, electrical controls, and bridge structure on a complete, single source contract.
